Must Reads for College/University Students and Parents

The author, Agnes L. Scott, reveals obstacles she is attempting to overcome due to the seeming dereliction of duties, which she categorizes as academic bullying by professors and administrators in the University of Toledo’s Judith Herb College of Education, Health Science and Human Service, Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership program, in her pursuit of a doctoral degree.  She does this in a manuscript, Bullies in the Ivory Tower:  An African American Woman’s Fight for Educational Justice and a PhD, and a documentary, Bullies in the Ivory Tower:  An African American’s Thirteen-Year Fight for Educational Justice and a PhD at the University of Toledo:  If I Die Before They Wake.  Scott is also in the process of writing a five-volume documentary publication, Is Your Research Teacher or Professor Impeding Your Progress?  Each volume addresses a step in the process of educational research:  (1) Identifying the Problem, (2) Reviewing Information, (3) Collecting Data, (4) Analyzing Data, and (5) Drawing Conclusions. Each volume shows via correspondences and University documents how Scott’s dissertation committee, other professors and administrators interacted with her during the process.  These interactions support her professor/administrator-to-student academic bullying allegations.  The dissertation proposal defense and the dissertation defense presentations are discussed.

Are the interruptions in Scott’s pursuit truly the result of her ineptness, as professors and administrators appear to be set on proving, or are these devious manifestations contrived due to some below-the-surface issue with Scott?  What is the driving force behind these impedances?

The revelations in these publications are intended to start a dialogue among students, parents, professors and administrators, community leaders, anti-bullying activists, attorneys, legislators, policy makers, physicians (especially mental health advocates), and subject matter experts about professor/administrator-to-student academic bullying.  If these acts are acknowledged, then they can be addressed properly. 

Proceeds from these books will be used to help victims of bullying receive psychological treatment.

The manuscript, Bullies in the Ivory Tower:  An African American Woman’s Fight for Educational Justice and a PhD, is a non-fiction memoir.  It covers the 1998 fall semester through the 2006 fall semester of Agnes L. Scott’s enrollment in the University of Toledo’s Judith Herb College of Education, Health Science and Human Service, Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership program, telling a story of obstacles that were seemingly placed in her path by professors and administrators in her pursuit of a doctoral degree.  The story takes place in a Nashville church as she recollects the injustices she experienced in university life.  The injustices are interwoven with a Sunday morning service sermon.  It tells of a time when she thought that there was nowhere to turn, that no one could fight the Ivory Tower, that the only thing to do was to give up the dream.  Instead, she remembered her faith and decided to fight for her education.  After she finished the manuscript, she embarked upon a 450 mile bicycle trip, from Nashville, Tennessee to the University of Toledo, to deliver the book to Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, President of the University of Toledo to inform him of the obstacles she was encountering at the University.

The documentary, Bullies in the Ivory Towers:  An African American Woman’s Thirteen-Year Fight at the University of Toledo for Educational Justice and a PhD:  If I Die Before They Wake, is also a non-fiction memoir.  It picks up the story from Agnes L. Scott’s first publication, Bullies in the Ivory Tower:  An African American Woman’s Fight for Educational Justice and a PhD, where she identified obstacles encountered in her pursuit of a doctoral degree after enrolling in the University of Toledo’s Judith Herb College of Education, Health Science and Human Service, Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership program.  This documentary covers later semesters, the 2007 spring semester to the 2012 spring semester.  After this publication was finished, it was also delivered to President, Lloyd Jacobs, at the University of Toledo.  Most authors who write on the subject of student academic bullying by professors and administrators identify overall problems and suggest solutions; this documentary goes farther. 

These manuscripts are not glossy paged, polished, publications.  They are raw-data, documents that not only expose oppressive, debilitating tactics carried out by professors and administrators, but they actually connect the perpetrators to those acts by positions and correspondences.  The purpose of these documentaries is to break the “culture of silence” that the imbalance of power, professors and administrators over students, fuel and perpetuate.  This uncivil draconian behavior will not stop until the “culture of silence” is broken, that is, students are given the power to speak out, and university agents that commit these acts, including the ones who look the other way, are held accountable.

President, Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, protesting what appear to be
injustices.

You file a racial discrimination claim with the Office for Civil
Rights/Department of Education.

Two dissertation defense dates (the first week in December
is rescheduled for 12/17/10) do not take place.

On your supposedly defense date, you receive an email suggesting, from your Dissertation Chair, Dr. Mary Ellen Edwards, and a dissertation committee member, Dr. Svetlana Beltyukova, that you rewrite your dissertation (research
questions, hypotheses, theoretial framework, etc.).
